It was found in the strong room in the Chief Clerk’s office in the old H.Q. in Jordon Street, Preston and was rescued and re-bound by the then Chief Clerk, Mr. W.W. Thornton in 1936. The book purports to be compiled with permission, from official documents and contains a royal coat of arms. On page vi, can be found a three page advertisement for the book itself. The contents include a unique collection of names and dates in police history and it is also possible to reconstruct the rank structure, size and organisation of those police forces that existed in 1844.
